Homemade breakfast tacos served at Porter Haus

Breakfast

Karen's kitchen is the real draw

Every morning starts with a made-from-scratch, country-gourmet breakfast. The kind of cooking guests bring up long after they've checked out.

  • Home-cooked, from-scratch breakfast every morning
  • Special diets and allergies accommodated with advance notice
  • Coffee on the back patio, with deer and wild turkeys for company

It's not a continental spread in a lobby. It's breakfast at a table, in a house, made by someone who wants you to enjoy it.

Your Hosts

Rick and Karen live here too

Porter Haus is Rick and Karen Porter's own 14-plus acre hilltop home, and since they opened their doors in December 2019, they've run it themselves. Which is the difference guests mention most.

You won't find a front desk here. You'll find two people who remember your name, ask about your dietary needs before you arrive, and are genuinely glad you came.

Local Guide

Fredericksburg, Texas

Ten minutes from Main Street, a world away. The property sits on top of a hill on Highway 16 toward Llano. What follows is independent travel information about the area, not a promise from the inn.

Main Street and German heritage

Free to stroll · about 10 minutes by car

Fredericksburg was founded by German settlers in 1846, and Main Street still carries it: stone storefronts, the Vereins Kirche museum in the Marktplatz, German bakeries and biergartens. Evening parking fills fast on weekends; go early or let Rick shuttle you in.

National Museum of the Pacific War

Paid admission · about 10 minutes by car, 311 E Austin St

Admiral Nimitz's hometown museum is one of the best WWII museums in the country. Plan half a day; the Pacific Combat Zone reenactments run on select dates.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area

Paid entry, reservation required · about 18 miles, roughly 25 minutes by car

The pink granite dome is Texas Hill Country's icon. Day passes sell out, especially on weekends, so book online before you go. Sunrise hikes are the move.

Wine country on US-290

Tastings paid · 15 to 25 minutes by car east of town

Dozens of wineries, breweries, and distilleries line Highway 290 toward Johnson City. Ask Rick about his private 5-hour winery tour or a ride-only option; tours are arranged by phone at least two days ahead.

Old Tunnel State Park

Small entry fee, seasonal · about 30 minutes south by car

From May to October, millions of bats pour out of the old railroad tunnel at dusk. A genuinely strange and wonderful evening out.

Wildflower season and the half-mile trail

Free · on the property

In spring the driveway blooms with acres of wildflowers, and the property's own half-mile walking trail winds through native plants and post oak trees. Deer, fox, and wild turkeys treat the grounds like their own.

Good to know before you go

  • Food: Fredericksburg is famous for German food and Texas wine rooms. For breakfast tacos and peach season treats, follow the locals' line, not the billboards.
  • Pitfalls: Enchanted Rock requires a reserved day pass. Main Street festival weekends book out months ahead; check the town calendar. Texas sun is real in summer, bring water on hikes.
  • Getting around: You will want a car. Rick also drives guests to wineries and shuttles 2 to 6 people to and from Main Street (10am to 10pm, round trip $45).
  • Safety: The hilltop is dark-sky country at night, watch your step on the trail after dusk. In spring and summer, check for ticks after walks in the grass.
  • Getting here: 12101 N State Hwy 16, Fredericksburg, TX 78624. About 10 minutes north of downtown toward Llano. San Antonio International Airport is roughly 80 miles away.
